SELF-DEPORTATION: THE UNTOLD TALE OF A MARGINAL WOMAN

Narrative | 20 min | 2015
Role: Editor, Sound Designer
Director: Eugene Sun Park, Full Spectrum Features
Producer: Cynthia Bond

Self-Deportation tells the story of an Asian American woman (played by Wanda Jin) who crosses over into a surreal world after a series of strange encounters on the subway. Caught in an endless loop of subway cars and mysterious hallways, she becomes lost in the fantastical landscape of "Real America" --dreamlike environments populated by various American archetypes: a peppy cheerleader, a fast-talking politician, an heroic firefighter, etc.

Her final act of “self-deportation” – both literal and figurative – raises questions about our notions of home and belonging.

Based on a public performance by artists Sara Zalek and Ginger Krebs (presented by Out of Site Chicago), this film invites the viewer into a bustling public space filled with commuters. Inspired by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s "Resolve to be Ready" campaign, the performance features coordinated team action that exemplifies possibilities for cooperation in public spaces, while highlighting the ways in which public anxiety is increasingly “managed” as a public relations exercise.

SEMI-TRANSPARENT

Interactive web project | work in progress
Role: Camera
Director: Lisa Marie Patzer

In it’s final form, it will be an interactive web project that explores the creation, maintenance and rewriting of identity in the context of digital social networks. Semi-Transparent approaches identity as a performative act that is socially constructed, reinforced, and reiterated by one’s social network. Social networking has shifted from the physical to the digital realm, heightening the reliance on disembodied signs to signify identity. Personal profile images, uploaded by visitors to the website, along with other visual tropes of digital identity such as profile data and status updates will serve as metaphors of identity construction and destruction. These visual signifiers will be composited onto a video interface of a woman building a digital image.
